History of Pawn Broking
Pawn broking is the oldest recorded method of lending money. It is written that
Queen Isabella financed Christopher Columbus' voyage to America by pawning her royal
jewels.
The word "pawn" originates from the Latin word "platinum" which means cloth or clothing.
In early times, people's principle assets were their cloths, and they often borrowed
money on them.
The universally recognized pawn broking symbol was derived from an Italian legend
of the money-lending Medici families. They were fabled to have slain a terrible
giant with three sacks of rocks. These three globes later became part of their family
crest, and ultimately, the sign of pawn broking.
So how does a pawn shop work?
Money is lent on any item of value. Loans can be tiny or large, depending on collateral.
Service charges are regulated, and there are no hidden fees. No credit check is
needed. Items that are pawned are usually redeemed by the original owner, but if
they are not, shoppers have the opportunity to purchase at a fraction of retail
price.
